SAFETY AT PROTESTS

Indivisible North Coast Oregon (INCO) places a high value on the safety of our citizens and those who participate in protests, rallies and other events that we sponsor.
We have a safety team on hand at every event whose members are trained in recognizing potential hot spots and de-escalation techniques. They are recognizable by their neon vests and carry walkie talkies. Contact us if you would like to help out in this way.

Here’s a simple bullet-point list of effective ways to de-escalate tension at a protest:

  • Stay calm and grounded – Regulate your own emotions before engaging.

  • Use a calm, respectful tone – Speak slowly and clearly to reduce agitation.

  • Consider walking away- and encouraging others to do the same

  • Listen actively – Show empathy and validate feelings without judgment.

  • Avoid physical contact – Maintain personal space unless necessary for safety.

  • Position yourself non-threateningly – Open posture, hands visible, no sudden movements.

  • Focus on shared goals – Remind others of the protest’s purpose and values.

  • Use creative energy – Music, chants, or humor can shift the mood positively.

  • Call in support – Look for INCO Safety Team members in neon vests.

  • Encourage breathing and grounding – Help others reconnect with their bodies and surroundings.

Physical Contact

Avoid physical contact with agitators or counter protesters by maintaining personal space.  Keep yourself at a safe distance at all times. A 'safe' distance is more than an arms length, ideally 5' or more between yourself and agitators.

A Workbook for Action Peacekeepers or Event Marshals

This guidebook offers practical tools and principles for peacekeepers, rooted in the belief that nonviolent discipline is not just a tactic — it’s a strategy for resilience. By projecting calm, modeling solidarity, and preparing for the unexpected, peacekeepers help movements withstand pressure without fracturing. If fear is the goal, then solidarity is the antidote.

PROJECT 2025 AND GOP AMBITIONS

Here's an in-depth analysis of the MAGA playbook by Indivisible Project 2025 Explained.

A few hardy souls are tracking Project 2025's timeline and goals. You can track the regime's resignations and firings here. There's also Trump Tyranny Tracker on Substack, which gives more details about the latest regime horrors. These sites are worth checking out.

On Tyranny by Timothy Snyder

The Founding Fathers tried to protect us from the threat they knew, the tyranny that overcame ancient democracy. Today, our political order faces new threats, not unlike the totalitarianism of the twentieth century. We are no wiser than the Europeans who saw democracy yield to fascism, Nazism, or communism. Our one advantage is that we might learn from their experience.

On Tyranny, is a call to arms and a guide to resistance, with invaluable ideas for how we can preserve our freedoms in the uncertain years to come.

INDIVISIBLE DIY

Melt the Ice Hats

During the Nazi occupation of Norway in WWII, Norwegians made red tasseled, pointed hats resembling gnome hats that were meant to keep up hope. Over time, the hats became prevalent and were seen as a symbol of protest. The Nazis banned them in 1942.

The movement in the U.S. in 2026 opposing ICE is bringing back the hats, now known by many names including “Melt the Ice.” You can make one yourself and wear it in defense of human rights. Find the patterns to knit or crochet hats below. Both are on a fiber arts site called Ravelry but can be viewed without an account. The $5 download fee goes to immigrant aid agencies in Minnesota.

Are you already making red hats and have information to share with us about it? Contact us at tech@incoregon.org.

Bunny Hat Pins

Support children in ICE detention with this Bunny Hat pin, inspired by the hat worn by Liam Conejo Ramos, a five-year-old boy, who was detained by agents on his walk home from school in Columbia Heights, Minnesota while wearing a blue hat with floppy bunny ears. Liam and his father were the taken 1300 miles away and interned in the Dilley TX detention camp. Dilley is one of three camps where DHS keeps families with children.

Print your own Bunny Hat pins with the STL file and instructions below. We suggest you consider a donation to an organization like Haven Watch which assists immigrants in Minnesota or Detention Watch Network which works to end immigration detention in the U.S.

Migra Whistles

People in Chicago started 3D printing whistles this fall in response to ICE’s Operation Midway Blitz. Now the DIY whistle effort has gone national and whistles are used across the country as an alert signal by bystanders to a DHS action.

We’re publishing one version of the whistle below and the zine with all the information on how to use whistles. Many more versions, links and information HERE from Migra Watch PDX.
